The Reason

It is something that Joff has wanted to do for a long time. The States have always appealed and whilst the politics (used to) try the patience of a saint, the colours, the wildlife and the sheer grandeur of  the place have tempted him. Reports from explorers suggest that the natives are also very friendly.

Alternative options that also appeal, including a route through the ex-communist “Stans” to China, and another to Cape Town via Jordan will have to wait for now.

Once we had decided to do the trip, we were then asked on a faily regular basis whether we were going to do it for charity. Having agreed that we would,  we felt that we should do it on behalf of a small charity, one that recieved less publicity than many, but one which needed all the help it could get (both financially and in terms of its publicity). As Joff’s best man’s nephew, George,  has Duchenne - which neither of us had ever heard of - we felt that this was a worthy cause.  And the more we read about it, the more convinced we were that our choice had been the right one.

We intend to support ourselves entirely, by renting our house out. Joff even sold his motorbike in order to help out. This was a rather sad episode, but he is recovering well.

100% of the money made by us during the run up to the trip, as well as actually on the trip will be given directly to the charity. The vast majority of it will be channeled via the www.Justgiving.com/cycletheamericas  webpage.
