FAQ’s

This set of questions and answers is based on what we feel are the most commonly asked questions, when meeting people over here, at home. Of course, the range and ingenuity of questions will change as we cycle along, and so the FAQ’s will continue to change as we go.
    1. How far do you intend cycling per day?    Between 30 and 50 miles.
    2. (And now that you’ve begun cycling, what is your average?    Usually between 55 and 85 miles)
      3. What sort of accommodation are you planning on using?     Our tent, friends’ houses, Couchsurfing contacts, Warmshowers contacts, hostels (both YHA’s and Independent)  and motels.
      4. Will you be cooking?    If we have to…
      5. Will you be doing any PR en route?    Yes. We aim to give a few talks in aid of Duchenne. Joff will talk about the legal, technical and practical aspects of protecting historic buildings in the UK, to ‘historic preservation’ groups across the States.
      6. What about visas? We have a US visa because we’ll be there more than 90 days, and will obtain the relevant information about entry into all upcoming countries as and when necessary.
      7. Now that you’ve actually begun the trip, how many mosquito bites have you had?    Joy is immune to mosquitoes, Joff has had 102.
      8…..and blackflies…?    Joy - 0 Joff - 53
      9. What has surprised you the most in the US?     The friendliness of the people, but the wildlife, the scenery and the SCALE of the place have all been very surprising.
      10. How many punctures have you had?    None. (Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres all round) - UPDATE - 2 in my rear tyre. No idea what it was, but I had to replace the tube, as I couldn’t find the second hole….!
      11. How many new bikes have you had?    1 (see our diary insert as to why)
      12. What about the traffic? It’s been pretty good so far, allowing enough room so that we don’t feel too vulnerable, but today, 4 drivers with their brains removed came a little too close for comfort  (on the north shore of Lake Erie, in southern Ontario)
      13. It seems at present (June 2009) that Mark Beaumont has the backing of the BBC. Can you get that too?   We’re trying, but not very hard. He wears lycra and goes rather fast. We wear baggy trousers and average 12mph. And Joff is not very photogenic :)
      14. How do I get a link on your website?   Say something nice about us, donate to Actionduchenne, through our Justgiving page or help us out in some way.
      15. What is your longest day? 92 miles in Montana.
      16. And your shortest..? 8 miles around town, on a day off. We also rode a whole 26 miles into a strong headwind in North Dakota one day.
